Hurston on the Porch
This photograph was taken in 1935, and it was a part of the Lomax-Hurston-Barnicle recording expedition. It depicts folk musicians in the southern parts of the United States, showing the nature of gatherings on the porch to share music and stories. Hurston likely got inspiration for the communal scenes in Their Eyes Were Watching God from her time on this expedition.
